It has been a long effort to gain a federally recognized “Quiet Zone” along the Union Pacific rail line that runs through the Five Points residential area. It was a a lengthy pursuit, and on June 26, 2016 the trains’ requirement to blast their horns at every intersection in Five Points came to an end.
The method of Union Pacific’s implementation is unfortunate. They closed too many cross-streets instead of installing no-pass barriers, which has had an adverse effect on car and pedestrian traffic. However, residents, businesses, and guests of Five Points are very pleased with the reduction of train noise.
