President’s Message – June 2025

Fred Evans, president

Your Board has been busy. It has designed a more concise version of our flyer. Secretary/Treasurer Tony Labrado has sent an email blast including the flyer to our members and all our contacts. Kristin Perez has canvassed the Five Points business district passing out flyers and speaking with business owners and managers. Your President has set up a meeting with District 2 Representative Dr. Acevedo and requested a meeting with District 8 Representative Canales and is awaiting a reply from his office. Manhattan Heights Neighborhood Association (our neighbors to the north) President Craig Peters has accepted our invitation to attend our special meeting and sent notices to his members. Eastside Central Coalition (our neighbors to the south) President Micheal Davis has accepted our invitation to attend and was encouraged to send information and invitations to his members.

The subject of our June meeting is the Piedras Street Assault. This is a citizen meeting with no speakers. We have heard from the City and each time the plan is more and more complete, 90% the last time we heard, funding is in place, and the time for listening to the neighborhood has passed. This plan could be the difference between and life for many businesses in the Five Points area and beyond and must be derailed. At this week’s meeting, we will present the plan, our views, suggest alternatives, engage in discussion and develop a plan of action.

We are looking for a large turnout so that we can hear from all who are concerned, from Paisano to Old Beaumont. Your participation is important. We have outlined our analysis and conclusions in the linked flyer. Please feel free to distribute copies of the flyer to any who may have an interest in the planed assault on Piedras and Five Points.

Our July program is City Manager Dionne Mack. She has requested a list of topics and Piedras is among the ones we submitted. Our June meeting will be the basis of our questions and concerns for her regarding Piedras Street.

Fred Evans, president
