President’s Message – January 2025

Fred Evans, president

I apologize for the absence of a newsletter for the last few months of the year. Health and business issues. But good news——or bad as you choose, your newly elected board has elected me to another year as President. I will strive to keep up this year.

QUICK REVIEW
In October we had a forum for candidates for District 2 City Representative. I understand that VP Tracy Carter and the Board did a fine job in my absence and members found the presentations interesting and helpful. These are the types of informative programs that bring value to your membership. Dr. Acevedo won the election and he has become a member of FPDA!

In November were privileged to hear Dr. Jack Loveridge, the District 3 EPISD Trustee who represents the Five Points area. Dr. Loveridge replaced Dr. Josh Acevedo on the Board. He lives right up the street in Manhattan Heights and was one of those opposed to school closings. He shared his views of education and his assessment of EPISD’s performance. In a word, he thinks, as do many of us, that we can do better in terms of methods, management and student outcome. He received a warm welcome and he has joined FPDA!

As part of the November meeting, we presented the nominating committee report, took nominations from the floor (one nomination) and held a secret ballot election of board members as provided for by our recently adopted bylaws. The members present elected Fred Evans, Geoffrey Wright, Tony Labrado, Dinah Kilgore, Tracy Carter, Kristin Perez, Leticia Diamond and Martha Flores. Officers are elected by the board from the board members. Besides my election, Tracy Carter returns as Vice President and Tony Labrado returns as Secretary-Treasurer.

FPDA held its annual Christmas Party at Su Casa on December 11th with great food and service thanks to the Su Casa staff that came in especially for us and the fine work of Board Members Kristin Perez, Tracy Carter, Dinah Kilgore and Tony Labrado who coordinated all the details. There were lots of door prizes, lots of opportunities to get to know fellow members and just to have a good time. Oh, by the way, all present got to see the new Board sworn in by District 2 Representative Dr. Josh Acevedo. By the time the party started, there were over 50 reservations. If you weren’t one of the attendees, you missed a great event. Plan on being there next year.
